Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre Gets Internet-Enabled Audiovisual Upgrade
Many gathered today, July 25th, 2024, in Paul Hendrickse Hall for one reason: the commissioning of the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre Internet-Enabled Audiovisual Upgrade Project, provided by the MBBS (Ibadan) Graduating Class of ’78 in partnership with the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (ICOMMA) UK & Ireland and the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. The title of the program is a mouthful, but it is well worth it.
The event started with the National Anthem, the University of Ibadan Anthem, and the College of Medicine Anthem. The program was hosted by the outgoing Deputy Provost, Professor A.F. Adeniyi. He introduced the many guests present, some of whom included:
Outgoing Provost: Professor Olayinka O. Omigbodun.
Newly Elected Provost: Professor T.A. Ogundiran.
President of ICOMMA: Worldwide Prof. Emmanuel Otolorin.
President of ICOMMA UK & Ireland : Dr. Olayiwola Ajileye.
Alumni members of the MBBS ’78 class
Administrative members of the College of Medicine Ibadan.
The event was a hybrid one, with many of the attendees joining online.
Next was the Provost's welcome address. Professor Omigbodun reminisced about the old days and recollected how the project started. She expressed gratitude to the sponsors and mentioned other projects being sponsored by ICOMMA and the MBBS Class of ’78. The program continued with remarks from the MBBS Class of ’78, represented by Dr. Opeyemi Babatola. Dr. Babatola was excited to be in Paul Hendrickse Hall again and happy to see the numerous changes that differed from his time. He recollected his memories of Professor Paul Hendrickse, the man after whom the hall was named, and how he inspired many doctors in Nigeria, himself included. He expressed that he and his class were proud to have made such a change to the hall, which has been the center of learning for the College of Medicine, Ibadan, for a long time.
The next remarks were given by the President of ICOMMA Worldwide and the President of ICOMMA UK & Ireland, respectively. They both expressed their joy at the changes and recollected how the funds for the project were obtained and the hardships they faced due to Nigeria’s failing economy. They expressed gratitude to all who contributed and showed interest in doing more in the future.
A student representative, Mr. Williams Owoeye of Biomedical Laboratory Science, was given a chance to express the student body's perspective. He recollected how the lack of such technology during the COVID period made learning hard and expressed his gratitude on behalf of all students to the various parties that had contributed to the development. Dr. Adebiyi, a cardiologist, explained the various technologies in place and how they ensured optimal learning conditions.
The program came to a close after the commissioning/tape cutting, closing remarks, and anthems were sung.
A student, after the program, said that he was inspired by the various alumni and hoped to leave his mark on the College in the not-too-distant future.
