Braces; A Symbol Of Wealth?
It hasn’t been so long ago that the dental orthodontic device; the braces, became a sign of ostentatious wealth. Much like other fashion accessories, the meaning of braces as a status symbol has been propagated not due to any inherent quality of the braces themselves. The symbolism of dental braces is owed to how wearers flaunt it. The dental braces has propagated a stereotype that wearers are associated with wealth and are sometimes snobbish, reinforcing the idea that dental health is expensive, dental practitioners are extremely wealthy, and that most dental visits will leave one changed for life in one way or another.
Braces are of many different types. It would be pertinent though, to put the horse before the cart and not discuss the mechanism by which braces work. Braces are devices similar to surgical sutures or arm casts. The goal is to create an environment that applies certain physical constraints. This environment is needed to ensure correct, physiological remodeling or restoration of the body part on which those forces are acting. For braces, the goal is slow, steady, and constant application of a force in a specific direction. Through this process, crowded teeth and derangements of dental arrangement are fixable, usually over months.
The characteristic, ‘fashionable?’ speech defects that many have come to associate with braces may be due to the braces themselves. Braces, like most other implants, do not leave the area of the implant the same, especially for the duration that the implants will stay. One who wears braces might have read this article and said "More loiyk shomwun whew never shaw a shunroishe in the land of the lowuh clash men, filthy pigsh that they auh." Most people recover from speech defects caused by the installation of braces. All it requires is practice. Some people though never fully regain complete speech correctness. Also, there are removable, part-time braces that can be removed at certain times of the day. They are more commonly used by those with the energy and money for more regular dental visits.
Now while braces are the signs of a wealthy man they may soon become the signs of a wealthier man. Research is dense in the world of biodegradable and absorbable implants and dental braces are not spared. It is possible that what the future holds for one of history’s longest-performed dental procedures is a gradual phase-out. The issues with braces from gingivitis to the difficulty of adjustment and cost of maintenance will likely lead to a future of absorbable dental braces. If absorbables do fall through, unabsorbables might become a lot costlier and less popular.
