A REFLECTION ON NIGERIA'S POLITICAL TRANSITION

In 2015, General Muhammudu Buhari (retired) was democratically elected as the President of Nigeria. This marked a significant turning point in Nigerian politics as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which had held power for 16 years, was overthrown by Buhari’s victory. His election was preceded by multiple failed attempts, making his ascent to the presidency all the more significant.

Buhari’s tenure as president, which lasted for eight years, brought about a range of experiences and challenges for Nigeria. His election in 2015 was fuelled by promises to address critical issues such as corruption, security, and unemployment. Throughout his presidency, Buhari implemented various policies and initiatives to tackle these challenges and transform the nation’s socio-economic landscape.

As Nigerians bid farewell to Buhari’s presidency, they reflect on the progress made, the challenges faced, and the aspirations for a brighter future under new leadership. While some people think he took some great strides in aspects such as economy, infrastructure, human rights and security, many think that he failed as President of Nigeria. He campaigned on promises of addressing various issues, such as security, corruption, and unemployment. Critics contend that the administration failed to fully deliver on these promises, leading to disappointment among many Nigerians.

With the election of a new president, Nigerians are now looking forward to the inauguration of the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is set to take the oath of office.

NIGERIANS’ REACTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS.

After Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared the winner of the presidential election by INEC, Nigerians had mixed reactions. Many expressed dissatisfaction with the integrity of the independent body, prompting some to protest at the Appeal Court in Abuja.

The opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, also filed a court case seeking to disqualify Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, based on allegations of double nomination. However, the federal High Court in Abuja declined to issue an interim injunction to stop Tinubu’s inauguration.

The Supreme Court recently dismissed the PDP’s suit, citing a similar situation in 1999 when the PDP faced a similar issue with its candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The court found no valid case in the PDP’s claims regarding Shettima’s nomination as Tinubu’s running mate, highlighting the lack of changes since 1999.

In spite of the opposition, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proclamation of winning the election was met with a wave of enthusiasm. Numerous Nigerians, including prominent figures, have congratulated him on social media, expressing high hopes for his presidency. They expect him to replicate his success in Lagos on a national scale, with specific areas of anticipation, such as: unifying the country, strengthening the judiciary, and promoting future economic growth.

However, some Nigerians remain indifferent about Tinubu’s presidency due to concerns about his health. Generally, they hope that the President-elect will surpass the performance of the previous government.

EVENTS LINED UP FOR THE INAUGURATION

The President-elect’s inauguration has featured different activities including the installation of Kashim Shettima as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger and Tinubu as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, an Inauguration lecture by His Excellency, Uhuru M. Kenyatta, former president of Kenya which will culminate into the Inauguration Parade and Swearing-in, scheduled for May 29, 2023 and holding at Eagle Square in Abuja. Leading Nigerian officials and dignitaries from various countries, will attend this high-profile event as representatives of Nigeria’s traditional allies.
