UADS HEALTH WEEK: DENTISTRY; PRACTICES, POLICIES AND PERSONNEL.

The forty first Unibadan Association of Dental Students Association health week is finally upon us. The bar has been set, expectations are high and anticipation has been built up. We would recall that UADS pulled off a glamorous show at the preceding health week aptly themed Quarantieme: A Story in Colour. This then begs the question, will the current administration sustain and perhaps surpass precedence that has been set?

Running with the theme Dentistry; Practices, Policies & Personnel, the health week seeks to portray dentistry for what it is – an independent practice as opposed to the general notion, in the CODEH outreach. Policies to showcase the role of a dentist in governance in the Health week symposium. And also personnel which involve people on their way to becoming dentists at various levels and dental practitioners presently in different sectors of life.

It begins with a Bon fire, which promises to be somewhat different from the norm. This will be followed by, CODEH, symposium, Quiz, movie night, sports and ultimately dinner tagged A Dance with Dragons.
Notably, this year’s health week does not include a picnic which has been traditionally done over the years. In a bid to understand the rationale for this, the chairperson of the planning committee, Mr Atinmo, explained that at the time, this decision was made majorly because it was initially slated for March which coincided with the 2023 Nigerian elections and as such, there were concerns about security. Also, they couldn’t find a good alternative, hence, efforts were channelled towards ensuring dinner provides as much fun as a picnic would.
Publicity for the health week started quite early and has in fact sparked different conversations and leaving people wondering if there will be actual dragons at the dinner, for example.

However, the top notch quality of graphic designs and videos, has put an overwhelming spotlight on some activities such as dinner and bonfire, which may have very well distracted from focusing on less highlighted activities such as CODEH outreach slated for 9th May and also the Maiden edition of the UADS Marathon. It then begs the question of how much priority is being given to these other activities such as sports and consequently if members of the association will participate maximally.
Nonetheless, given the 3 day lecture free days for dental students, it is hoped that the health week lives up to expectation with great participation across all classes.
