UADS Decides 2025: Interview With Olabode John Olamide, Aspirant For The Office Of The Special Duties Officer

Good evening. Can you tell us about yourself — your name, class,  and the post you are running for?

Good evening. My name is John Olamide Olabode, and I am from the 200 Level class. I am running for the position of Special Duties Officer (SDO) of the Unibadan Association of Dental Students (UADS).

What inspired you to run for this post?

My decision stems from a genuine strong desire to serve and a genuine commitment to improving the preclinical arm of UADS. I believe the role of the SDO isn't just a title, it is a responsibility. It involves amplifying the student voices and enhancing the welfare of preclinical students by serving as a reliable Exchange and Information Officer.

You mentioned a desire to serve. Can you list some positions or committees within UADS where you have served?

I have served in various capacities — as a member of the CODEH 23/24 team, the UADS Sports Committee, and the Health Week Publicity Committee. I also served as the Orientation Coordinator for the 2K28 class, Sports Coordinator for the 2K27 constituency, and contributed to the Publicity Committee.

Can you tell us what the role of the Special Duties Officer entails?

According to the UADS constitution, the SDO serves as the Exchange and Information Officer for the preclinical arm of the association. The officer is primarily responsible for the welfare of preclinical students and may be assigned other duties by the Executive Council.

What challenges do you think the preclinical arm currently faces — or are there none?

I believe the major challenges are:
1. Low participation in UADS events, and
2. Apathy toward the payment of dues.

What are your plans to address these challenges?

I plan to collaborate with the Treasurer to organize an enlightening session titled “Why Pay Dues?” to explain how dues directly benefit both students and the association. I also plan to introduce incentives — such as airtime and data giveaways — alongside peer mobilization and friendly inter-class competitions to boost engagement. I believe these strategies will go a long way in addressing the current challenges.

Can you briefly share any special plans you have for the preclinical arm if elected?

If elected, my key plans include:
—Reinvigorating preclinical engagement in UADS activities.
—Fostering a strong sports culture within the preclinical arm.
—Revamping the preclinical information board at the Preclinical Lecture Theatre to ensure timely and consistent communication.

What are your closing words for UADS members?

I believe service is not about a position — it’s about taking action. With the support of UADS members and their votes, I am confident we can build a stronger, more united community.
