New Year Tenure Review: Interview With The Vice President

The Dentatics Press met with the Vice-President of the association, Durojaiye Olanrewaju for a quick chat on her plans for the tenure. The Vice-President, the Assistant General Secretary and senators in certain classes were voted in via by-elections. Below is a snippet of Durojaiye Olanrewaju’s manifesto containing her plans in office.

Prioritizing Student Welfare
My primary goal is to ensure every member feels supported and included. I will:

1) Enhance the Personalized MB Package: Building on the successful work of the previous administration, I will continue this initiative because I believe it fosters a stronger sense of community and belonging among all members.

2) Scholarship Opportunities: Our information page will be regularly updated with timely and relevant scholarship and professional opportunities, such as the Global Sponsor a Student Program, to provide tangible support for students in need.

3) Conduct Regular Class Check-ins: I will organize both physical and virtual visits to classes, with a special focus on preclinical students, to address their concerns directly and ensure they feel connected.

4) Provide Targeted Support: The regular visits to classes will help to actively identify and assist members with genuine and urgent needs, ensuring no one is left behind.

Fostering Professional Development
To equip our members with the  necessary skills to compete on the global scene, I plan to organize the following initiatives:

1) Host a Research Writing Webinar: In partnership with organizations like the Dentiscope Editorial Board, this series will feature expert-led sessions on various topics in research writing to spark members' interest and proficiency in research.

2) Organize "Charting the Pathway 2.0": This entrepreneurship initiative will build on past successes by focusing on the growing interests of young dentists in business. It will cover topics like "How to Start a Health-Related Business," "Establishing a Private Practice," and "Building a Successful Brand as a Dental Student."

Mid tenure Sports day
In collaboration with Sports minister, a mid tenure sport day will be organized to bring together members of the faculty in one spirit and love to go head to head in football, volleyball and indoor games.

Working with the office of President
A leadership summit will be organized. The main focus will be the Executive Council and Senate, while it will also be open to any interested UADS member.

44th Healthweek
Working closely with the Executive Council and committee heads, I will lead efforts to organize the 44th Health Week, ensuring a successful and unforgettable event worthy of our association's history and track record.

The question from the press after going through the manifesto was how she planned to streamline her plans with the rest of the executive council considering her late start to the duties of the office. She responded by saying that she would simply work hard. She cited the example of having to prepare MB packages for the professional exam classses. She mentioned that she did not let the abrupt introduction to the duties of office and narrow time gap to deter her. The eventual timely delivery of food items and MB packages with personalized notes was a result of great efforts. As such, she assured that she would have no problems keeping up.
