Dentatics Press Officially Inducted into the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan
The Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), University of Ibadan, hosted its maiden Global Campus Journalism Summit (GCJS) and the 36th Induction Ceremony on Saturday, 30th November, 2024.
The event, which brought together members of the Dentatics Press and other Local Press Organizations to pledge their commitment to upholding ethics of journalism, took place at the KAAF Auditorium, Faculty of Public Health. Originally scheduled for 8:00 AM, the event commenced at 10:00 AM.
The summit, themed “The Future of Journalism in Nigeria: Press Censorship, Digital Misinformation, and the Missing Perspectives,” brought together seasoned journalists, UCJ alumni, and campus journalists to explore the evolving challenges in Nigerian journalism. Concurrently, the induction ceremony, themed “The Campus Journalist’s Creed: Ethics, Accountability, And Impact,” honoured new members' commitment to ethical reporting.
The event began with an opening remark by the UCJ President, Tarre Elizabeth Tosanwumi, setting the tone for the day. This was followed by a series of activities, with one of the highlights being the launch of the debut edition of CAMPULSE’24, a magazine showcasing diverse works by campus journalists across various institutions.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards, including the Martin Isaac Prize for Best Inductee, Most Energetic Member, and winners of the Sunday Oguntola Essay Competition. These awards demonstrate the union’s commitment to recognizing excellence and inspiring dedication among its members.
Experts from mainstream media, including the Lagos State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, as well as UCJ alumni and other prominent journalists shared their insights at the event. Notable speakers included Bunmi Kolawole, Sunday Oguntola, and Chief. Adeniyi Ismail, Olamide Tejuosho, Mayor Isaac Brown, Alao Abiodun, Seyi Awojulugbe, Rahma Jimoh, Dr. Yinka Egbo, and Olamide Abe, among others.
Dentatics Press spoke to a few inductees to gather their thoughts on the event and how they plan to apply the knowledge gained to their various Local Press Organizations.
Jesse Bina, Dentatics Press preclinical correspondent and a newly inducted member of UCJ, expressed excitement about his journey ahead: “As someone passionate about writing, I hope to channel this passion into my commitment to my Local Press Organization (LPO).”
Similarly, Moshood Sidiq outlined his vision for fostering inclusivity in the press: “To enhance my local press organization, I aim to increase our visibility and actively engage with marginalized desks. This will amplify our voice and foster a more inclusive press organization.”
Sunday Precious, a member of UIMSA Press and nominee for the Best Inductee award, expressed excitement about his nomination despite not winning. “I am looking forward to doing better in the future. Congratulations to the winner,” he said. He also shared that he applied for the UCJ Best Inductee award after ranking as one of the top scorers in the entrance exam.
Goodwill messages were delivered by Press Bodies from Southwestern tertiary institutions, including UCJ, University of Ilorin, Association of Campus Journalists, OAU, The PRESS Club, UNILAG, and others. The program came to an end at about 5:15pm.
Members of the Dentatics Press from the preclinical arm who attended the event included Bina Jesse Preye, Abiona Michelle Eniola, and Adeniyi Joy Oluwadamilola. Meanwhile, clinical members Bello Victoria Taiwo, Salami Wisdom, Olajide Olamide, and Shittu Opeyemi Habeeb were also inducted but absent due to unavoidable engagements at UCH.
