Celebrating World Oral Health Day
Patient: "Doc, are these teeth worth saving?"
Dentist: "Only the ones you want to keep!"
Meet Timi, a 400-level student who survives on four hours of sleep, three cups of Nescafé, and a steady diet of instant noodles. Timi hasn’t seen a dentist since he gained admission into the University and there is one thing Timi doesn’t know: while he is studying aggressively for finals, a colony of bacteria is currently taking a "road trip" through his systemic circulation. By the time Timi actually feels pain, he won’t just be looking at dental fillings, he will be looking at a bill that costs more than his semester’s textbooks.
We all get that "low-battery" notification on our phones and rush for a charger, but did you know your body’s most sophisticated warning system is sitting right under your nose? It sounds like a punchline, but for many, the joke is on their health. We happily spend money on the latest skincare routines, gym memberships, and overpriced data bundles, yet we treat the gateway to our entire body, our mouth, like a spare room we only visit when the roof starts leaking.
Think about the blood vessels in your jaw, they aren’t just static tubes, they are highways. When we ignore a cavity or bleeding gums, we aren’t just losing a tooth, we are inviting bacteria to hop onto that highway. Once these bacteria are in the bloodstream, they don't stay put. They travel and settle in the valves of the heart, causing disease, complicating other health conditions like diabetes even harder to manage.
The truth is simple: You cannot be healthy if your mouth is sick. To mark this World Oral Health Day, we urge you to adopt the 2x2 Rule: Brush for two minutes, twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth daily (yes, flossing). Schedule a dental check-up at least once a year.
The message is clear: A happy mouth is a happy body. Don’t wait for the pain to start. In the world of dentistry, pain is often the last sign of trouble, not the first. We encourage you to adopt the 2x2 rule today, because your smile is the only curve that sets everything straight.
Happy World Oral Health Day, and to our Muslim brothers and sisters, Eid Mubarak!
