Dentistry Clashes with Jaw War Debutants, Nursing
The Jaw War Press Conference 2024, organized by The Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan (TLDS), kicked off with a buzz on Friday, 27th September 2024, at the Junior Common Room, Ransome Kuti Hall. This highly anticipated event marks the beginning of the largest interfaculty and inter-hall debate competition in the university, setting the stage for intellectual battles over the next few months.
With some notable changes to the usual format, the competition promises to be more engaging than ever. The theme and timeline for Jaw War 2024 was unveiled as follows:
Theme: Africa's Travails and Triumphs: Moving Forward and Learning From The Past.
27th September – Press Conference
24th November – Rally
26th November – First Leg Inter Halls
28th November – First Leg Inter Faculty
3rd December – Second Leg Inter Faculty + First British Parliamentary (BP) Exhibition Round
5th December – Quarter Finals (Inter Halls) + Second BP Exhibition Round
7th December – Quarter Finals (Faculty)
17th December – Semi-finals (Faculty and Halls)
8th January 2025 – Finals
It was no mistake that the edition of Jaw War 2025 was tagged 'Rise of the Legends' as during the balloting for the faculty rounds, one of the most interesting pairings emerged as the Faculty of Dentistry was drawn against the Faculty of Nursing, who are making their debut appearance in Jaw War this year. The topic for debate is 'The major cause of post-colonial African troubles: External or internal factors?' Will the Faculty of Nursing rise to the occasion?
The faculty of Dentistry, well-known for their sharp arguments and strong presence in prior Jaw War contests, will have a new opponent in the Nursing department. The Nursing team, despite their inexperience, is expected to be well-prepared, and many students are excited to see how the rookies fare in their first significant outing.
With a restructured timeline, scrapping of the second leg in the first round Hall category, and the introduction of a British Parliamentary Debate exhibition round during this edition of Jaw War, Jaw War 2024 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting editions yet. Debaters will not only showcase their oratory prowess but also engage with critical issues in an intellectually stimulating environment.
