University Management Approves Use of Gas Cookers In School Hostels
On the 1st of November, 2026, a signed memo from the Student Union announced that the school management had finally approved the use of gas cookers in halls of accommodation. This approval comes into effect from the next academic session.
The approval of the use of cooking gas was one of three other conditions put forward by the Student Union after a protest and an Emergency Student Congress on the 6th of May, 2026. The other two conditions were:
1) improved electricity supply and
2) the immediate reopening of the University Health Services.
While the original timeline stipulated that these demands be met within 2 weeks, the University Management stated that safety measures had to be put in place before cooking gas could be approved. This was the major contributor to the eventual nearly seven-month-long wait.
The demands came in response to the rapid increase in the cost of living, especially in products like kerosene and sachet water.
