Navigating the Highs and Lows: An Inside Look at Nigeria’s AFCON Rollercoaster

Despite conceding only two goals in six matches and maintaining an unbeaten record, Nigeria seemed poised to replicate their earlier 1-0 victory against Ivory Coast in the group stage. Taking an early lead with a header by the captain, the Eagles appeared on track to clinching their fourth historic trophy at the Allasane Ouattara Olympic Stadium. However, their hopes were dashed as Frank Kessie and Sebastian Haller rallied, firing their team to a third African Cup of Nations Golden Medal. Despite Super Eagles’ performance throughout group stage and the knock-out stages and having eventually earned the trust and hearts of Nigerians and well-wishers from other Nations around the world, they delivered their worst performance of the tournament at the most critical moment. Their defeat left many Nigerians heartbroken, raising questions about the team’s performance, their deservingness of praises for reaching the final, and whether they can be trusted in the future.

Before AFCON, the Super Eagles were considered the tournament pretenders rather than contenders, following their poor performance in the two world cup qualifiers and three friendlies leading up to the African cup of Nation. Under the leadership of their Portuguese coach, the team struggled to maintain a perfect record, conceding goals in five consecutive games, winning only one, drawing three, and losing one against Guinea.

However, during AFCON, the Nigerian team redeemed themselves after a disappointing opening game against Equatorial Guinea. They regained confidence by defeating the host nation, Ivory Coast, in the second round of Group A matches. Overcoming various challenges, they won four games in regulation time and secured a spot in the competition final after a penalty shoot-out victory against Bafana Bafana.

The positive contributions of players like Stanley Nwabali and Willian Troost-Ekong deserve special attention. Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, achieved four clean sheets leading up to the semifinal game against South Africa. His exceptional performance significantly impacted the team’s success, as they went approximately 450 minutes without conceding a single goal. Additionally, the goalkeeper made crucial saves, including two penalty stops against Bafana Bafana, playing a pivotal role in Super Eagles’ advancement to the final.

William Troost-Ekong, affectionately known as “Captain, Leader, Legend,” alongside Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, orchestrated the team’s journey to the championship game by marshalling the most formidable defense in the competition. Troost-Ekong made history as the only defender to score three goals in a single CAF African Cup of Nation campaign. These remarkable achievements, amongst others, led to Ekong being honoured as the tournament’s best player, despite his team not lifting the trophy.

In the attacking front, Victor Osimhen consistently kept opposing defenders on edge and significantly influenced Nigeria’s offensive prowess. The Napoli forward’s impact remained palpable despite persistent isolation by Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka during offensive switches. A key source of Osimhen’s opportunities came from Ola Aina, who provided him ample of chances, the most by a full-back in AFCON since 2013. Additionally, Ademola Lookman emerged as another vital figure in Nigeria’s attack, showcasing his talent in two crucial AFCON fixtures. 

Like the good moments, it’s only fair to acknowledge that there were other moments. Moments where one doubted the rationale behind the call-ups of some players into the Nigeria National team. Moments where one totally believed one would do far better given the same opportunity to play for the Super Eagles. Many raised eyebrows at the inclusion of players like Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, and Zaidu Sanusi in the starting lineup, questioning their impact on the team’s performance. Criticism also surfaced regarding Coach Jose Peseiro’s decision-making, particularly concerning his selections, formations, and substitutions. These moments highlighted the divergent, yet coherent, opinions within the Nigerian football community regarding player selections and coaching strategies.
